I was thinking the other day, (yes I know that's a bad habit for me), and it occurred to me that we, the fallen human race, love lies. We love them to death...in a manner of speaking. We love to be lied to and we often love to lie when it allows us to please ourselves in some way or to get away with something.
We surround ourselves with lies. Consider some of these sources of continual incessant lies:
Television Commercials are the worst and the most obvious. This diet pill will make you gorgeous for only $19.95, this big juicy hamburger will satisfy that pang of hunger in your heart, the sorrow in your marriage will blissfully flee if you only take this pill, this car will thrill you and excite you and make you handsome and attractive. This miracle product will make your life so much easier, and if you act now we'll give you two for the price of one!
The underlying promise in every commercial is always a lie intended to please or attract a selfish aspect of our lives. The industry studies us like lab rats and finds new and exciting ways to induce us to spend our money; and then, we praise them with awards for the best commercial and we give them pats on the back for making the largest profit. "Why certainly these must be the best liars of all time", we never say...we merely look at the gratifying result and praise it flamboyantly.
We even pride ourselves on knowing that they are lying to us, but there is that selfish nature inside that WANTS to believe it is true and the next time we go to the grocery store we find ourselves buying that product...
Movies and TV Shows are an act of lying. They are built on the idea of getting your mind to view what it sees as being as real as possible. In fact, we have fallen for this hook, line, and sinker. Now, if you watch a movie that was produced just 20 or 30 years ago you see nothing but flaws. "The 'special effects' in that movie were horrible!" we say, and in essence we are saying "They really sucked at lying to me!"
Movies and TV Shows also tend to attract our carnal nature. Sex, violence, promiscuity, adultery, vengeance, hate, worldly love, selfish gratification, murder, occult, sorcery, mockery of God, pleasure seeking - these all are our daily fare when partaking of these convenient idols. We even lie to ourselves and say, "They aren't a problem for me" or "I'm not actually doing them and I know it's all fake so what's the harm" ...but do we ask ourselves whether God sees it that way? What might He say if we asked Him, "God, I know you don't want me to DO any of these things, but I'm not. I'm just WATCHING them. As long as I'm only watching them and getting pleasure from watching someone else commit atrocious sins I'm sure you'll just wink and turn the other way....right?"
Accepting pleasing lies is a core problem. We welcome lies that are generated to boost our ego, and we feel attacked and threatened when a lie hurts us in some way. For instance if we were in court, accused of a crime, we would become enraged by the idea of someone lying about us, but what if that lie was generated to help us in the court case, would we have the same opinion?
Lying can become a habit for some; a habit so hard to break that the lies will continue until the bitter end to protect themselves. Lies can take on a life of their own; starting out small but ending up big and out of control. We lie to make ourselves look good and to obtain some perceived advantage. We lie to avoid a consequence that threatens self. We sometimes lie to others to please their selfish nature because we know it would feel good to us if someone told us the same thing.
So what is the core of the problem of lies?
Self. Lying is always generated in an attempt to protect, uplift, glorify, or soothe self. I can think of no sin that happens without a lie to start it. All sin is selfishness manifested. Let's look at an easy example.
Adultery:The lie - The "grass is greener" on the other side. It feels so good to be "appreciated" by someone else. They make me feel happy. My husband/wife could never make me feel this good. The truth - Self is getting a boost. Self is going on a "make me happy" tour and has put aside all thoughts of others; sometimes including children, family and friends.
How is this topic one of encouragement?
If your asking yourself this question, don' worry, we're going there now. Don't forget who made us and what He did for us. A lie may have brought sin into this world, but the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life has defeated sin once and for all. This promise was given right after the first lie and the first sin were committed. Let's have a look...
Gen 3:1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, "Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?" [LIE!]Gen 3:2 "Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden," the woman replied. Gen 3:3 "It's only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, 'You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.'" Gen 3:4"You won't die!" the serpent replied to the woman. [LIE!]Gen 3:5 "God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil." [LIE!]Gen 3:6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. [SELF GLORIFIED]Gen 3:7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. [RESULT]
And then our Loving God steps in and makes the first prophecy (promise) of a Messiah.
Gen 3:8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. Gen 3:9 Then the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" Gen 3:10 He replied, "I heard You walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked." Gen 3:11 "Who told you that you were naked?" the LORD God asked. "Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?" Gen 3:12 The man replied, "It was the woman You gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it." Gen 3:13 Then the LORD God asked the woman, "What have you done?" "The serpent deceived me," she replied. "That's why I ate it." Gen 3:14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live. Gen 3:15And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike His heel."[THE PROMISE]
The promise is Jesus!
Jesus has destroyed Satan. Sin and the result, death, have been defeated. They were defeated at the cross. And now we have the blessed promise that we can consider ourselves dead to sin...
Rom 6:11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus. Rom 6:12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.
Jesus has fought the battle for us. He has defeated sin and the devil once and for all. We need to daily consider ourselves dead to sin and alive in Christ Jesus and the victory won by Jesus can be ours.
Thank You Jesus for loving us that much! Thank You God for giving Your Only Begotten Son to take our place and live the sinless life that we never could. Thank You for making that transaction...we have nothing to offer and You gave everything to give us Your Life, which is Eternal Life. I bow before You today Lord and accept that gift. I ask You for the Holy Spirit to lead my life. I thank You that You are willing to give so much. Help me to use this gift to glorify You today. Amen.
